Roll a Fisherman How to Roll & Hire Fishermen
Spend Spins intelligently, keep the Dock honest with Equip Best, and stop Commons from blocking your best hires.
Rolling is how your Dock improves
In Roll a Fisherman, Spins (and some Cash hires) feed the fisherman pool that occupies your Dock. Better Dock units catch better or faster fish; better fish upgrade the Stand; the Stand prints Cash for upgrades and Rebirth. If you roll without a placement plan, Commons clog slots and your Spins evaporate into clutter.
This guide covers rolling, hiring, Equip Best, and full-Dock decisions. Income after the catch is covered in Fish Income. Who is worth keeping is covered in the Tier List and Players roster.
Spins: where they come from
Early accounts get a burst of Spins from codes: UPDATE1 (3), UPDATE2 (2), FISHING (2), SEAL (3), plus any event spins. Redeem steps live on the Codes Hub. Later Spins come from gameplay rewards, shop offers, and update gifts tracked on Updates.
Rule: Spins in the wallet catch zero fish. Roll them when you have attention to Equip Best afterward — not while AFK in the menu.
Rolling vs hiring with Cash
- Rolling (Spins) — RNG toward new fishermen. Modified by Roll Luck (Gold upgrade line).
- Hiring (Cash) — more deterministic shop purchases when a named unit is available at a listed price.
Use Spins to discover and fill early slots. Use Cash hires when the shop shows a clear upgrade over your worst Dock member and you are not about to brick a Rebirth bank. First Rebirth sits near 100k Cash observed — see Rebirth.
Equip Best (use it constantly)
Equip Best is the quality-of-life button that pushes stronger fishermen onto the Dock based on the game’s ranking heuristic. Smash it after:
- Every Spin batch
- Every Cash hire
- Every Rebirth (new slots appear)
- Any time you return from being AFK
Then manually verify. Heuristics can undervalue luck specialists you care about (for example keeping Angler Mia or Alaskan Fisher over a slightly pricier but wrong-fit unit). Your eyes + the tier list beat one blind button mash.
Full Dock strategy
When every Dock slot is filled, every new roll forces a decision:
- Is the new fisherman better than your worst equipped unit?
- If yes, replace that worst unit (Equip Best often does this — confirm).
- If no, keep the new unit only if storage / future Dock expansion (Rebirth) makes parking them rational; otherwise accept they are collection clutter.
- Never leave a stronger unit in the backline while Homeless Fisher still occupies a live slot.
Homeless Fisher is a fine tutorial Common and a C-tier long-term piece. Bench them the moment Rookie Sam, Angler Mia, or anything A-adjacent appears.
Early rolling targets
| Priority | Fisherman | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bench ASAP | Homeless Fisher | Starter only |
| Early upgrade | Rookie Sam | Temporary bridge |
| First real target | Angler Mia | Observed 2x luck, ~45k |
| Luck follow-up | Alaskan Fisher | Observed 2.5x luck |
| Mid Cash ladder | Pirate Pete / Dr. Bob | Observed ~1.5M / ~3M |
Late targets (Clown Timmy, Coral Zoey, Cloud9, Sea Commander) are mostly Cash-gated legendaries/endgame — Spins alone will not regularly print Sea Commander. Plan banks with Getting Started discipline.
Gold: Roll Luck and friends
Gold from codes (GOLD, UPGRADES) and play should hit:
- Roll Luck — when you have Spins queued and Dock quality is the bottleneck
- Catch Luck / Fishing Speed — when Dock is already decent but fish quality/rate limits Stand upgrades
- Mutation Luck — when you specifically chase mutation value (synergy with units like Coral Zoey)
Do not max a vanity Gold sink while Roll Luck is still cheap and you are about to dump twenty Spins.
Rebirth makes rolling better
Observed first Rebirth perks include rolling luck, Dock expansion, money multiplier, offline time, and +1 fish slot. That means:
- Post-Rebirth Spins are more valuable — save a small Spin buffer if you are one Cash push away from 100k
- New Dock slots should be filled before you go shopping for duplicates of mid units
- Equip Best after prestige or you will fish with half a board
Auto Roll scripts
Community scripts advertise Auto Roll, Hire, and Auto Equip Best. They remove friction and add ban risk. Manual players can match most of the benefit by batching Spins whenever they sit down to play. Read Scripts before touching executors.
Practical roll session
- Redeem new codes; note Spin count.
- Check Dock — empty slots first priority.
- Spend Spins in one batch.
- Hit Equip Best; manually replace any leftover Commons.
- Collect fish; update Stand (Fish Income).
- Decide Cash: hire upgrade vs bank for Rebirth.
- Optional Gold tick into Roll Luck if more Spins are incoming.
Mistakes to avoid
- Rolling one Spin at a time without ever opening Equip Best
- Buying Cash hires that duplicate your worst trait while Spins sit unused
- Chasing Sea Commander screenshots during your first hour
- Ignoring luck units (Mia / Alaskan) because a slightly pricier name looks cooler
- Going AFK mid-batch with Spins half-spent and Dock half-updated
Roll with intent and the rest of the Guides Hub compounds. Roll on autopilot and you will own a museum of Homeless Fishers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What does Equip Best do?
It assigns your strongest fishermen to Dock slots using the game heuristic. Use it after every roll or hire, then manually fix luck specialists if needed.
Should I roll when the Dock is full?
Yes if Spins are burning a hole in your wallet — but only keep units that beat your worst slot or that you will place after Rebirth expansion.
Is Homeless Fisher worth keeping?
Only at the very start. Replace with Rookie Sam, Angler Mia, or better as soon as they appear.
When do I buy Roll Luck?
When you have Spins ready and Dock quality is the bottleneck. Otherwise prefer Fishing Speed or Catch Luck for income.
Do Rebirths help rolling?
The first Rebirth was observed to improve rolling luck and expand the Dock, making later Spins more valuable.
